George Kambosos vs Devin Haney June 4th in the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia
On June 4th, George Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) and Devin Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) will meet in Marvel Stadium located in Melbourne Australia to fight for the Undisputed Lightweight Championship.
First Five Belt Lightweight Champion Matchup
The winner will become the first five belt champion of ever, so this will be a highly anticipated matchup between the two fighters. Kambosos recently became the IBF, WBA, WBC franchise, and WBO lightweight champion after beating Teofimo Lopez in dramatic fashion, while Haney has defended his title as the WBC lightweight champion four times against Joseph Diaz, Jorge Linares, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Alfredo Santiago.
Kambosos recently came to fame after beating Teofimo Lopez in a fight that Lopez did not take seriously; however, he lost in his hometown of New York to Kambosos in an unprecedented fashion. Kambosos was not favored to beat Lopez by casual boxing fans; however, my prediction was that Kambosos would beat Teo because I believe Kambosos is a good fighter, but he is not on the same level as Devin Haney in terms of boxing.
He will need to rely on Devin Haney making a mistake in order to win this fight. Devin Haney is clearly the better boxer. Not only does he have more fights than George Kambosos, but he also has more knockouts than Kambosos with all of his latest matchups being fighters in the top 10 of the lightweight division. Haney has been criticized by George heavily in the media, but Haney will still enter the ring as the favorite to win on June 4th.
"Haney Will Run For His Life" - George Kambosos (FightHype Interview)
George Kambosos sat down with FightHype.com to give an exclusive interview. In this video, he is claiming that Devin Haney has a "ton of holes in his boxing defense." He cites Devin Haney's latest two fights where Haney switched his style to be more aggressive and fight in the pocket to please his fans versus sticking to what he is a master at which is boxing.
Kambosos Is Trying to Appeal to Casual Fans
Casual fans of the sport watch boxing matches to see someone get knocked out; however, boxing is the sweet science of hitting and not getting hit back! This is why when Haney fights his style and not a style to please casual fans that truly do not care about the sport of boxing, he gets caught more. However, when Haney fights the style he has perfected, he is very elusive and hard to hit, which makes "the Dream" a nightmare for his opponents who are fighters in the sport of boxing.
In the FightHype interview, it is very interesting that Kambosos is trying to paint the picture that Devin Haney will "run for his life," despite Kambosos fighting off of the back foot against his matchup with Teofimo Lopez.
He knew that he could not dominate Lopez in the pocket because when he tried, he got knocked down as well so he fought him on the outside and on the back foot, which is boxing. However, when he does it, he does not refer to it as running for his life.
The Key for Devin Haney to Dominate George Kambosos
With that being said, if Haney sticks to his specialty, Kambosos does not have a chance to win unless Haney tries to fight for the casual fans rather than fighting the style he perfected to hit and not get hit. The only way for George Kambosos to win this match is if Devin Haney gets away from what he is good at and tries to fight Kambosos in a style that does not suit him.
Haney should stick to his elite boxing skills, use his speed, and use his jab to keep Kambosos on the outside and frustrated since Haney has the reach advantage and he should also utilize more movement to keep Kambosos off balance. If Haney tries to fight in the pocket or in an exchange, this is the only way Devin Haney can lose this fight.
George Kambosos Says That Haney Is Not an Elite Boxer
Kambosos was quoted as saying, “Look, I’ve been a contender on the rise for a long time before I won these titles. So, I’ve been looking at all these guys. I’ve got notes on all these guys. I know how to beat all these guys and I will continue to beat all of them – one by one, round by round, one by one. So, look, I’m not gonna disrespect Devin Haney. He’s a good boxer. But he ain’t elite, and he will find that out the hard way.”
For Kambosos to win this fight, he is going to need Devin Haney to make a mistake. He can say "I'm not going to disrespect Devin Haney" in one moment and then continually disrespect him the next chance he gets on video, but Haney is known for letting his skills do the talking and he lives by the quote "they say everything but let's fight."
Devin Haney Became the Youngest Champion and Now Can Become the Youngest Undisputed Lightweight Champion of 5 Belts
Devin Haney is a very skilled boxer and many say he is on the path that Floyd Mayweather Jr created of being the youngest to become champion, but now he has the opportunity to be the youngest and first Unified-Undisputed 5 belt champion of the lightweight division and I do not believe Haney will take Kambosos lightly, which was Teofimo's mistake.
George Kambosos, on the other hand, is a very brave fighter. He has never been afraid to take a step up in competition, until recently where he tried to make Devin not accept the fight by sending him one of the worst contracts in boxing history. However, now that the fight is made, we know that Kambosos always comes to fight and not box.
This is why I believe that Kambosos does not want Haney to use the style that got him to his position of being WBC lightweight champion. Kambosos has a very stiff jab and he's very fast as well, which could present problems if Haney underestimates him in these areas, so this should be an interesting matchup.
Prediction for Devin Haney vs George Kambosos
My prediction for the fight is that Devin Haney will outbox George Kambosos and make George regret saying everything that he has because he is now acting like Teofimo was before Teo lost to George. Haney's last opponent Jojo Diaz stated in a FightHype Interview that "Devin will walk through Kambosos."
This is going to be a great fight, and I can't wait to see it.
